DETROIT, Mich. – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today (February 12th) by 12th ranked Wayne St., 89-65. With the loss the Storm falls to 9-15 overall and 4-14 in the conference, and with the win the Warriors improve to 20-2 overall and 16-2 in conference play.
Wayne St. opened the game on a 15-2 run. The run was ended when Shelby Carpenter (Dayton, Ohio / Miami Valley) hit a three off of an assist by Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton), to make the score 15-5. The Warriors lead grew when they went on a 16-0 run that made the score, 31-5. Lake Erie came out of the second media timeout of the first half on a 8-2 run to cut the lead to 20, 33-13. The run was highlighted by a pair of three point shots by Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), the second of which was assisted by Narducci. Both teams traded baskets for the final nine minutes of the half, and Lake Erie trailed 46-21 at the intermission.
The Storm opened the second half on an 11-3 run that cut the lead to 17, 49-30. The run was highlighted by a steal and fast break layup by Carpenter, and Carpenter had seven of the 11 points on the run. The Warriors answered with a 12-0 run that gave them a 27 point advantage, 62-35. The run was ended when Carpenter made an unassisted layup. Lake Erie went on a 9-2 that ended with 6:52 seconds left in the game. The run was highlighted by a Gabor three off of an assist by Kaeding Skelton (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven), and the score was 76-50 in favor of Wayne St. The Warriors maintained their lead and won the game, 89-65.
Lake Erie was led by Gabor who had 18 points, and grabbed two rebounds. Carpenter had a career high 17 points, and also had two steals in the game. Jackie Murray (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) also scored in double digits for the Storm, 10 points and had three rebounds.
The Storm will be back in action when they play their final road game of the year against Findlay at 1 P.M. on Saturday (February 14th).
