PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College women's basketball team fell to Walsh University, 73-39, Saturday (Feb. 6) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division play.
The Storm jumped out to a 5-2 lead after a traditional three point play by Sami Narducci (North Royalton, North Royalton). The lead grew to 9-2 after baskets by Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), leading to a Cavalier timeout.
Following the timeout, the Cavaliers went on an 8-0 run, taking a 10-9 lead. Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) answered for Storm as they regained the lead. However, it was short lived as the Cavaliers went on a 10-0 run to finished the quarter and take a 20-11 lead into the second.
The Cavaliers led off the second quarter with a three-pointer. Gabor converted a pair of free-throws to bring the lead down to ten. Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio/Miami Valley) and Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Joseph Academy) hit layups to cap off a 7-0 run and bring the lead to 23-17. The Cavaliers answered with a 7-2 run to regain control. Kaeding Skelton (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) hit a layup at the buzzer but the Storm trailed 30-21 at the break.
Gabor led the Storm with six points in the first half while Jones had four. Sonneman grabbed five rebounds.
In the third quarter, the Cavaliers increased their lead to 42-28 at the media timeout. They closed out the quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 55-32 lead into the fourth.
The Cavaliers continued to control the pace of play in the fourth, securing the win.
The Storm was led by Dawson as she had nine points, nine rebounds, and two blocks. Sonneman added a career high seven rebounds and four points off the bench for the Storm
The Storm is back in action Thursday (Feb. 11) at home against Wayne State University.
