#1 Eagles Too Much for Storm on Road

ASHLAND, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team started off on the right foot against the #1 Ashland Eagles on Thursday (Feb. 9) night but a first quarter run pulled the Eagles away in a 111-70 win over the Storm.

Ashland opened the game with a 5-0 run before Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) made a three pointer. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) tied the game at five with a layup. With 4:29 left, Dawson cut the Eagles lead to 8-7 with a jumper after the Eagles took a three point lead. Ashland distanced themselves with a 17-0 run before Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) hit a layup with 12 seconds left. Ashland led 25-9 after one quarter.

The Eagles began the second quarter with nine straight points. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) made a free throw and three pointer as the Storm made a 6-0 run, cutting the lead to 19. The Storm got three free throws from Dawson and a three pointer from Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) as they maintained the gap at 19.  The Eagles pushed the lead to 24 and Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) answered with a three pointer. Gabor added a layup as the Storm trailed 45-26 at the half.

Dawson led the Storm with seven points at the half.

After an Ashland basket, Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored four straight points. Ashland pushed the lead to 23 points with 5:28 left, before Lake Erie made a big run to get into the game. The Storm fought back with a 14-4 run over the next three minutes. Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) scored six points as four players combined for the run. Lake Erie cut the lead to 63-50 with 2:15 left in the third quarter. Ashland pushed the lead to 20 by the end of the frame, with a 72-52 lead.

The Eagles used a 6-2 spurt at the opening of the fourth quarter to expand the lead to 24. Gabor made two free throws to cut the lead to 22. Ashland continued to add to the lead with an 18-2 run. With 3:41 left, Benner and Gabor combined for a 6-0 run with a three pointer and three point play, respectively. Over the course of the fourth quarter, the Storm made 11-of-13 free throws.  In the final three minutes, the Storm went six-of-eight from the free throw line.

Gabor led the team with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. Dawson finished with 13 points and two blocks. Chaddock added eight points for the Storm.

Lake Erie shot 77% from the free throw line in the game, making 23 of 30 attempts.

The Storm will host the University of Findlay on Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Osborne Center.
