PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team won their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) contest on Thursday (Dec. 7) night against the Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots.
The Storm scored a season-high 85 points in an 85-65 win over the Fighting Scots.
"Dawson had possibly the best game of her career highlighted by a double-double and eight assists! Chaddock had nineteen points, four assists and no turnovers running the point. Good to win our first G-MAC game and another big week ahead on the road back to West Virginia," said Storm head coach Bob Booher.
The teams tied twice in the first three minutes before Ohio Valley gained a 6-4 advantage. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored five points on a Lake Erie 7-0 run as the Storm led 11-6 with 5:49 left in the first quarter. Ohio Valley closed the gap to two points before the Storm closed the quarter with an 8-2 run. Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) scored six of the eight points during the run as Lake Erie led 21-13 after the first period.
Dawson hit a jumper and Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made two free throws as the Storm scored the first four points of the second quarter. The Storm led 25-13 less than a minute into the frame. The Fighting Scots cut the lead to nine twice before Gabor and Megyn Christensen (Swanton, Ohio / Swanton) made back-to-back three pointers. Gabor followed with a jumper, completing a Lake Erie 8-0 lead for a 35-18 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. Ohio Valley scored the next six points until Gabor nailed two straight three pointers as a part of an 8-0 Lake Erie spurt. The Storm led by 19 with 1:34 left in the half. The teams exchanged baskets in the final 90 seconds with Chaddock making a half court buzzer beater to end the half.
The Storm led 48-30 at the intermission with Gabor leading the Storm with 16 points. Chaddock added 11 points for Lake Erie in the first half.
Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) opened the second half with a jumper that gave the Storm a 20 point advantage. Ohio Valley pulled within 15 points before the Storm responded with a 21-4 run that spanned five minutes. Five different players accounted for points, including eight from Chaddock. Dawson added five and Breanna Bauer (Port Huron, Mich. / Northern) scored four points. The Storm had their biggest lead of the night, a 32 point lead with the score 73-41. Lake Erie led 73-44 after three quarters.
Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) snapped an Ohio Valley 7-0 run with a three pointer less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. Alexis Todd hit a three pointer that put the Storm up 79-49 with seven minutes left. The Fighting Scots ended the game with a 16-6 rally but the Storm finished the contest with an 85-65 lead.
Eleven different players scored for the Storm in the game as Chaddock surpassed her career-high with 19 points in the game on seven-of-ten shooting. Gabor had 18 points, including three treys and four assists. Dawson had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She fell two assists shy of a triple-double with eight assists, a career-high. Bauer made four baskets for a total of eight points.
The Storm will resume conference play next Thursday (Dec. 14) at Alderson Broaddus.
