CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team made a late run at the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets on Saturday (Feb. 17) afternoon but the rally came up just short as the Storm fell 75-70.
Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) scored the first eight points for Lake Erie as they led 8-5 three minutes in. Cedarville went on a 5-0 run, taking a 10-8 advantage one minute later. After the Yellow Jackets took a 12-10 lead, Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored six of the next eight points on an 8-0 run. Cedarville ended the first quarter with a three pointer but the Storm led 18-15.
Gabor opened the second quarter with a three pointer as the Storm pushed the lead to six. After a Cedarville three, Gabor scored two consecutive baskets creating more distance, a seven point lead. Cedarville went on an 8-2 run over the next three minutes, trimming the deficit to 27-26 with 4:11 left. The teams exchanged three pointers before Lake Erie ended the half on an 8-2 run. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored six points on the run as Lake Erie led 38-31 at halftime.
Each team scored a basket until Cedarville scored five straight points, cutting a seven point Storm lead to two. Dawson made a layup after a few minutes of back and forth action that put the Storm up 44-40 with 5:36 left in the third. Cedarville went on a 9-0 run for a 49-44 lead with 3:53 remaining. Dawson stopped the run with a layup but Cedarville pushed the lead to 54-48 after three quarters.
Gabor started the fourth quarter in the same fashion as the second with a three. A 7-2 run by Cedarville made it a ten point Yellow Jackets lead with six minutes. Dawson and Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) made back-to-back baskets, pulling the Storm within six. With an 11 point deficit with 4:27 left, Lake Erie scored six straight points with baskets by Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview), Benner and West. Cedarville used two straight buckets as the lead was pushed back to 73-63 with 1:54 left. A Lake Erie 7-0 run over the next 90 seconds made it a one possession contest at 73-70. Sonneman scored four points and Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) added a three point play. Cedarville closed the game with two free throws in a 75-70 victory.
Gabor led the Storm with 18 points and seven assists. Dawson finished with a double-double as she compiled 14 points and 13 rebounds (seven offensive) along with four blocks. Benner added ten points, three rebounds and two assists. Sonneman had ten points, with four free throws and five rebounds.
The Storm will host Walsh on Thursday (Feb. 22) at the Osborne Center. The game will tip off at 7:30 PM.
