PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team opened the final weekend of the regular season with a Great Midwest contest against the Walsh Cavaliers on Thursday (Feb. 22) night. The Storm was defeated 69-42.
Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) became the tenth player to reach the 1,000 career point plateau with a layup in the opening minute of the third quarter. She becomes the second current Storm player to score 1,000 career points, joining her teammate Kayla Gabor.
After Walsh opened the game with a three pointer, Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) combined for a 6-0 run as the Storm took a 6-3 lead with 5:44 left in the quarter. The teams exchanged baskets as Lake Erie led 8-7 at the media timeout. Walsh opened a 15-10 advantage with an 8-2 run over the next three minutes. Dawson closed the gap to two with a layup in the final minute of the quarter. Lake Erie trailed 17-15 after the first quarter.
The Cavaliers scored the first basket of the second quarter but Gabor and Dawson answered with four straight points, tying the game at 19. Walsh pushed the lead to three twice but Dawson and Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) answered for the Storm both times. Dawson gave the Storm a 25-24 lead with a layup at the 2:59 mark. The Storm trailed 28-27 at the half.
Dawson scored with a layup 25 seconds into the third quarter to reach her milestone and to give the Storm a 29-28 advantage. Walsh used a run to distance themselves and take a 53-33 lead after three quarters.
Dawson scored the first five points of the fourth quarter for the Storm, cutting the lead to twenty. Walsh ended the game with a 69-42 victory.
Dawson finished with a double-double that included 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Gabor added 13 points and three rebounds.
The Storm will close the 2018 regular season with a home matchup on Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon. Lake Erie will host Malone at 3:00 PM for Senior Day.
