Storm Falls in Sudden Death to Converse

SPARTANSBURG, S.C.— The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team fell in double- overtime against Converse College in their season debut, 11-10, in Spartansburg, S.C. Tuesday (March 4).

The Valkyries scored the first goal of the game, a little more than a minute in, before Hana Abu-Kwiek scored two straight goals to put the Storm in front.  Converse's Amelia Helm scored two straight goals as they regained the lead.  The lead was short lived as Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) scored her third goal- this time on a free position shot- to tie the game.  Samantha Gryba (Okotoks, Alberta/National Sports Academy) then scored her first goal of the game to give the Storm a 4-3 lead.  However, Elizabeth Gabriele scored two goals for the Valkyries to put them in front, 5-4, heading into the second-half.

Converse scored their third straight goal to kick-off the second-half but Gryba scored her second goal of the contest to cut the lead to one.  After Converse added another goal, Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) and Gryba scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at seven.  Jordy Taylor scored her second goal of the game for the Valkyries but Emma Miller (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) rattled off two straight goals for the Storm to take a one goal lead.  In the final seconds of play, Converse was able to notch a goal to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime session, Sydney Hickey scored the give Converse the advantage heading into the second overtime session.  Miller came through in the clutch for the Storm in the second session, scoring as time expired to send the game into a final, sudden death overtime. 

In the sudden death frame, Elizabeth Gabriele scored a minute-and-a-half in to give the Valkyries the win.

Abu-Kwiek, Gryba and Miller scored three goals apiece for the Storm and West added one.  Abu-Kwiek also tallied two groundballs and five draw controls while West had a team-high three ground balls and two draw controls.  Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) picked up an assist.

The Storm is back in action Thursday (March 6) at Belmont Abbey College.
