Storm Prevails in OT Against Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W. Va.—The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team prevailed in overtime on the road in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) thriller Friday (April 26), 15-14, against Wheeling Jesuit University.

Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) scored the game's first goal on a free-position shot before Wheeling netted the next three.  Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) halted the Cardinal run off a pass from Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio/IOlentangy).  The Cardinals scored two more to move ahead 5-2 before the Storm went on a 5-0 run.  Samantha Gryba (Okotoks, Alberta/National Sport Academy) scored a pair of free-position goals to start the run.  Emma Miller (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) scored the Storm's the third straight-also on a free-position to tie the game.  West then scored off an assist from Delaney Semancik (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) to give the Storm the lead before Kayla Bohn (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) brought the lead to two on another free-position shot.  However, the Cardinals added two late goals to tie it at seven heading into the break.

Wheeling continued their roll early in the second-half, scoring the first two goals.  After Quiggle scored on an assist from Bohn, Wheeling tallied a free-position goal to build the lead back to two.  The Storm would not back down, as Quiggle and Semancik scored to tie the game.  Once again, Wheeling netted a pair of goals to go ahead by two but Gryba stepped up for the Storm, scoring two straight goals to once again bring the game to stalemate.  The Cardinals broke the tie to take the lead but Quiggle scored late in the half to send the game into overtime.

Quiggle picked up where she left off, scoring the first goal of the overtime session to give the Storm the lead.  However, the Cardinals scored to tie the game heading into the second three minute overtime frame.  In the second frame of overtime West scored on an assist from Quiggle to bring the score to 15-14 Storm.  The Lake Erie defense held tough, as Abu-Kwiek picked up a groundball late in the extra time to seal the overtime victory.

Quiggle led the Storm with five points on three goals, two assists.  Gryba ended the game with four goals while West had three.  Bohn tallied three points on two goals, one assist and Semancik had one goal, one assist.  Abu-Kwiek and Semancik had one goal each.

Abu-Kwiek led the Storm with 10 groundballs while West had nine. Quiggle had five groundballs while Semancik and Miller had three apiece.  West and Quiggle caused two turnovers apiece.

Katie Holden (Whitby, Ont./Anderson C.V.I.) picked up the win in net, making 12 saves and causing a turnover. 

The Storm is back in action Sunday (April 27), traveling to Walsh University for their regular season finale.
