Storm Falls in Season Opener

GREENSBURG, Pa. –  The Lake Erie women's lacrosse team was defeated today (February 25th) by 19th ranked Seton Hill University, 12-7 in the season opener.   

Seton Hill scored the opening two goals of the game in the first four minutes.  The Storm answered back with a goal of their own when Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) found the back of the net to cut the Seton Hill lead to one.   The Griffins scored two more goals to give them a 4-1 advantage.  After a 10 minute scoring drought, the Storm cut into the lead when Mathis scored her second goal of the game from a free shot position.  Two minutes later Taylor Izzo (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) scored from a free shot position for Lake Erie to make the score 4-3, in favor Seton Hill.  The Griffins answered with three goals of their own to make to make the score 7-3 at half time.      

After Seton Hill scored the first two goals of the second half, Mathis scored her third goal of the game for the Storm, to make the score 9-4.  Seton Hill answered the Storm goal and increased the lead to, 10-4.  Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) found the back of the net from a free shot position to cut into the Griffins lead.  The Storm made the score 11-6 when Samantha Gryba scored an unassisted goal.  The Griffins answered with a goal to regain their six goal advantage, 12-6.  Lake Erie made the score 12-7 when Izzo found Anastasia Crwaford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) for the goal with nine minutes left in the game. 

Lake Erie was led by Mathis who had three goals, two ground balls, and one draw control.  Also Quiggle scored a goal and had two ground balls. 

Katie Holden (Whitby, Ontario / Anderson C.V.I.) was in net for the Storm as she faced 37 shots, 26 of which were on goal, made 14 saves, and allowed 12 goals. 

The Storm will be back in action Sunday (March 1st) when they travel to take on Wheeling Jesuit at 1 P.M.
