Storm Drops Close Battle With Dragons, 13-12

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team played their final game before the beginning of Great Midwest play on Sunday (March 11) afternoon.

The Storm fell to the Tiffin Dragons 13-12 in a close battle on the road.

Lake Erie jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first eight minutes. Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) scored first on a free position shot, then Meagan Maxwell (Hamburg, NY / Hamburg), Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) and Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) followed with unassisted goals. Tiffin cut the lead to one with three goals in the following seven minutes. After a scoreless nine minute period, Mathis added two more goals as Lake Erie led 6-3 with 5:42 left in the first half. Tiffin scored in the final ten seconds of the half but Lake Erie took a 6-4 lead into the locker room.

The Dragons scored first in the second half with a goal in the first three minutes. Two minutes later, Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) found the back of the net from a feed from Mathis. The teams exchanged a goal each over the next two minutes, including Mathis' fourth goal of the day. The Storm led 8-6 with 23 minutes left in the game. Both teams held each other scoreless for five minutes. After the scoreless period, Tiffin scored five times in ten minutes. A. Spin scored back-to-back goals, pulling the Storm within one at 11-10 with seven minutes remaining. Tiffin added two more goals, taking a three goal lead with 4:36 left. Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) quickly responded seconds later for Lake Erie. Mathis scored her fifth goal of the day with 1:50 left on the clock, but the Storm fell 13-12.

Mathis led the Storm with five goals and seven draw controls. A. Spin had three goals and five draw controls in the contest. Riley Heffron (Livermore, Ca. / Granada) grabbed two groundballs, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers. C. Spin scored one goal with two groundballs, and two caused turnovers.

Lake Erie kicks off Great Midwest play with a home matchup against Ohio Valley on Thursday (March 15) at 7:00 PM.
