NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team used a second half surge to rally for a 16-11 win over the Walsh University Cavaliers on Thursday (March 29).
The Storm outscored the Cavaliers 11-4 in the second half, including six straight goals scored in the Storm's fifth straight victory.
Walsh scored the first three goals in the first eight minutes of the contest. Lake Erie scored three straight goals, tying the game at three. Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) scored on a free position ten minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Lake Erie got two goals in less than a minute. Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) scored on an assist from Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) before Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) converted a feed from Crawford. The Cavaliers added two more goals over the next five minutes as Walsh led 5-3 with 13:37 left in the first half. A. Spin completed a man-down free position shot with 11 minutes left as the Storm trailed 5-4. After a six minute scoreless period, Walsh pushed the lead to 7-4 with three minutes remaining in the half. A. Spin scored her second goal of the half, a free position shot with one minute to go in the half. Lake Erie trailed 7-5 at the intermission.
Less than one minute into the second half, Walsh scored a man-down goal to make it 8-5. Crawford scored on two consecutive free position shots in the next five minutes. With 22 minutes left, Mathis scored an unassisted, man-up goal that tied the game at eight. Over the next two minutes, Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) scored two goals on assists from Riley Heffron (Livermore, Ca. / Granada) and C. Spin. A. Spin scored on an assist from Mathis as the Storm opened an 11-8 advantage with 19 minutes left. Walsh cut the lead to two with a goal before Andersen scored her third goal of the game with under 18 minutes to go. The Cavaliers trimmed the lead to two before the Storm pulled away with four goals over the final 12 minutes. Andersen scored off an assist from Meagan Maxwell (Hamburg, NY / Hamburg) before A. Spin scored two more goals. Maxwell also added a man down goal for the Storm.
A. Spin led the Storm with five goals and four draw controls. Andersen added four goals and two groundballs. Crawford had three goals, two groundballs, and a caused turnover. Chloe Nottingham (New Westminster, B.C. / New Westminster Secondary) had a team-high six groundballs and four caused turnovers. Haley Abraham (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) picked up three groundballs and caused four turnovers. Heffron and C. Spin each had four draw controls.
The Storm will travel to Ohio Valley on Saturday (March 31) for a Great Midwest matchup with the Fighting Scots, starting at 4:00 PM.
