Women's Lacrosse Clinches G-MAC Regular Season Crown

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team clinched the 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season title on Tuesday (April 24) afternoon, the first regular season championship in program history.

The Storm defeated the Ursuline College Arrows 19-5 for their 12th straight win. Lake Erie is now 12-2 overall and 10-0 in the G-MAC.

Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) opened the scoring for the Storm with an unassisted goal less than a minute in. Riley Heffron (Livermore, Ca. / Granada) made it 2-0 Lake Erie with a free position goal of her own one minute later. Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) scored from a Meagan Maxwell (Hamburg, NY / Hamburg) assist with 26 minutes left in the first half. Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) gave the Storm a 4-0 lead with a goal just under the 24 minute mark. Ursuline cut the lead to 4-1 with 22:36 left in the first half. A. Spin converted a free position shot with 20 minutes remaining as the Storm regained a four goal advantage. Nearly a minute after that, Heffron erased a man-down advantage as she was given a feed from Andersen. A. Spin made her second free position shot of the game with 16:47 left, giving Lake Erie a 7-1 lead. Three minutes later, Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) made a free position shot. Mathis added her second goal of the first half one minute after C. Spin's goal. After a four minute drought, Heffron and Mathis scored within a minute of each other. Ursuline scored in the final seconds of the first half, as Lake Erie led 11-2 at the half.

Lake Erie scored four goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Mathis scored two goals while Maxwell and C. Spin added a goal each. Maxwell assisted on one goal and A. Spin made two assists on the run. With 19 minutes left, Ursuline added a goal on a free position shot. Mathis connected with A. Spin on two consecutive goals in a five minute span. One minute after that, C. Spin scored on an assist from Brigid Lempko (Buffalo, NY / Mount Mercy Academy). Ursuline scored twice in the next eight minutes. Andersen beat the final buzzer for the Storm with an unassisted goal with three seconds to go. Lake Erie clinched the title with a 19-5 victory.

A. Spin had five goals and two assists along with four draw controls and four groundballs. Mathis had a similar stat line with five goals, two assists, four groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. C. Spin scored three goals and caused two turnovers with a team-high eight groundballs and seven draw controls. Heffron scored three goals of her own. Andersen had three points and two groundballs. Maxwell put one goal and two assists on the board with three groundballs.

The Storm will travel to Ohio Valley on Thursday (April 26) at 4:00 PM in the road finale.
