(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – A pair of nationally ranked teams will square off Friday evening as No. 19 Lake Erie hosts No. 16 Grand Valley State in the season opener at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium. Both teams had excellent 2018 campaigns that saw both teams combine for 29 wins and five losses.
For the Storm, that was in the form of a 16-2 season with those 16 coming consecutively after a pair of defeats to open up the season. Resulting from that was an undefeated G-MAC record as regular season and tournament champions.
The Storm, guided by Coach of the Year Mallory Ferrandiz, also swept all of the major individual awards for All-Conference recognition. While Cecilia Spin will be missed as the Defensive Player of the Year after graduating, her sister Anna returns as the Offensive Player of the year as does Freshman of the Year Riley Heffron.
Also returning are G-MAC All-Conference selections Chloe Nottingham, Harmony Moore, and Meagan Maxwell. Nottingham and Moore were both first team selections at defense and goalkeeper, respectively. Maxwell earned a nod on the G-MAC Honorable Mention team.
The offense churned through Anna Spin as the rising senior was seventh in the nation with 107 points on 65 goals and 42 assists. The 6.0 points per game was the 10th-best mark nationally as well.
On the opposite end Moore was just as effective defensively as she had a goals-against average of 8.10, the fifth-best mark in the nation.
