PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- In its unofficial debut, the Lake Erie College wrestling team won 16 of 17 matches over the University of Toledo club team in an unscored exhibition dual match at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic & Wellness Center Saturday (Nov. 6).
"I thought we wrestled tough and things look promising," said Head Coach Kevin Hoogenboom. "It was good to have an opportunity to wrestle someone other than ourselves and I thought it was a good way to start the season."
Freshman Chris Kelly (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) recorded a pair of wins on the day. Classmates Kevin Brunner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), Thomas Buryan (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood), Josh Etzel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), Josh Linden (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and Zachary Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), as well as junior Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga/Heidelberg) all recorded pins.
Freshman Mike Vitale (Wicliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) had arguably the most exciting win at 157 pounds. Trailing for most of the match, Vitale escaped Toledo's Alex Hesson to close within two and then tied the match with a takedown with 13 seconds to go. He went on to secure the winning takedown just 27 seconds into overtime.
"It was a good start, but we will certainly face a challenge next week," said Hoogenboom. "We will be competing in an open field with many top Division II and Division I programs."
The Storm makes its official debut next Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Washington & Jefferson College Open in Washington, Pa.
