In the first regular season competition in Lake Erie College wrestling history, the Storm grapplers had several successful matches as they picked up 34 wins at the Washington & Jefferson Open in Washington Pa.
Three Storm wrestlers placed in the matches as Lake Erie finished with a 34-35 overall individual record among its 17 competitors.
The highest finishes for the Storm were a pair for fifth place results for freshmen Josh Linden (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville). At 174-lbs, Linden dropped his opening match before storming to four straight victories. A narrow 2-1 loss left Linden in the 5th place match where he won by forfeit. At 157-lbs, Green won his opening three matches before losing in the semifinals to James Volrath of Penn State University and then falling in the consolation bracket to Nick Vallone of West Virginia University. Like Linden, he took the fifth place match by forfeit.
Freshman Zachary Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) had a strong outing with a sixth place finish at 149-lbs. Vargo won his first four matches to reach the semifinals where he fell to the eventual weight class champion, Emannual Ajagbe of Delaware Valley. Vargo was then forced to forfeit his two consolation bracket matches. Freshman 141-lb Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) went a strong 5-2 in the matches with two victories in the championship bracket.
Other multi-match winners for the freshmen Storm members were 125-lb Justin Toth (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside), 133-lb Kevin Brunner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), 133-lb Thoma Butryn (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood), 165-lb Andrew Gasber (Madison, Ohio/Madison), 197-lb Chris Kelly (North Olmsted/North Olmsted), and 285-lb Bill Vaughan (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights).
