PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie jumped out to an early lead with a win by freshman Justin Toth (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) but it was all Notre Dame College for the rest of the match in a 46-3 win for the top-ranked school in NAIA at the Jerome T. Osborne Center in Painesville, Ohio.
The Storm started strong out of the gates in the most thrilling match of the night as the 125-lb Toth jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the match before Notre Dame's Brian Hauser tied the match at 3-3 to overtime. In the extra period, Toth used a reversal to win the match in sudden death, 5-3.
Notre Dame, the defending national championship in NAIA, won the final nine matches of the contest, with three coming on pins. The closest of the match came at 157-lbs, where freshman Zev Green (Marrysville, Ohio) fell to Thomas Straughn, the top-ranked wrestler in the weight class in NAIA, 8-3. Green trailed just 4-3 at the midway point of that bout.
The Storm is in action on Sunday, Jan. 16, at the University of Mount Union Purple Raider Open in Alliance, Ohio.
