INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The Lake Erie College wrestling team is in 17th place out of 25 teams after the first day of the 2011 Midwest Classic on Sunday (Dec. 18) at the University of Indianapolis. The Storm scored 31 total team points on day one.
The Storm has three wrestlers who are still involved in the competition and will look to add to the team's point total on Monday. Sophomore Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and freshman Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) each dropped their opening match at 149 and 165 pounds, respectively, but then won four matches in a row to advance through the consolation bracket. The two will start in round six on day two.
Sophomore Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) won his first two matches before falling in the quarterfinals at 174 pounds. However, he rebounded in his first match in the consolation round with a 7-3 decision to move into round five.
Vargo went 4-1 on Saturday while Vandermeer and Green each finished the day with 3-1 marks.
Freshman Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) won his first two matches at 125 pounds but then was felled by medical forfeit in the quarterfinals and exited the tournament with an injury default.
Sophomore Mike Samijlenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy), who won two matches at 197 pounds, was the only other Storm grappler to finish with multiple victories.
The second day of action gets underway around 10 a.m. local time.
