PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Five Lake Erie College wrestlers captured top-five finishes amongst the field of over 200 participants at the inaugural Storm Open on Saturday (Jan. 7) at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center. The open tournament was unscored.
Leading the way was freshman Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) with a third-place finish at 125 pounds. Gillihan went 4-1 on the day, including a 7-5 decision over Kyle Visconti of the Ohio State University in the third-place match. His only loss on the day was in the semifinals to Kent State University's Alfredo Gray which came after he got off to a hot start with a pin and technical fall in his first two bouts.
Three other Storm wrestlers earned four individual victories on the day. Sophomore Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) was 4-2 and placed fourth at 149 pounds. Two of his victories came by major decision and his only two setbacks came to Blake Roulo from the University at Buffalo.
Redshirt freshman Isaac Morisette (Southgate, Mich./Southgate/Oakland C.C.) and freshman Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) also each went 4-2 and placed fifth at 141- and 165-pounds, respectively. All six of Vandermeer's matches were settled by decisions and he was 3-2 on the day in matches against Division I opponents.
Freshman Jon Schafer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) also placed fifth at 184 pounds with a 2-2 mark. He and five other Lake Erie grapplers earned multiple victories on the day.
The Storm returns to the mat on Friday night, Jan. 13, at nationally-ranked Mercyhurst College. That dual kicks off a busy weekend for Lake Erie, which will host Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday night, Jan. 14, at the Osborne Center.
