  • Vargo Reaches Championship Finals, Finishes as Runner-Up at 157

    Zak Vargo finished second at 157 pounds at the NCAA DII Championships Saturday night (March 9), falling to top-ranked Cory Dauphin 4-2 in the finals. The loss ended the un-ranked Vargo's run that included three shutout victories over top-six opponents on his way to earning Lake Erie's highest finish. His 19 points tied the Storm for 17th overall on the team standings.
  • Vargo Reaches Semifinals at NCAA Championships

    Junior 157-pounder Zak Vargo became the first wrestler in Lake Erie's three-year history to win an opening round match at the national meet and then became the first Storm wrestler to earn a spot in Saturday's semifinals with a second-round pin. Ian Ross and Dylan Zivcic, Lake Erie's other national qualifiers, bowed out of the tourney after two matches.
  • Five Storm Wrestlers Named to Coaches Association DII All-Academic Team

    Sophomore national qualifier Ian Ross and junior Zev Green were named to the Division II All-Academic Second Team by the DII Wrestling Coaches Association while Jared Merritt, Isaac Morisette and Tyler Tesny were honorable mention selections.

    Junior Tyler Tesny won the 174-pound weight class at the National Collegiate Open Wrestling Championships in Richmond, Va. on Sunday (Feb. 23). He earned National Open All-American honors along with Mitchel Porter (2nd at 157) and Nick Bloch (4th at 141).
  • Storm Sending Three to Nationals, Hoogenboom Named Regional Coach of the Year

    Ian Ross, Zak Vargo and Dylan Zivcic earned automatic berths to the NCAA Division II Championships and Lake Erie had a fourth-place team finish at the Super Region 2 Championships at Ashland this weekend. The Storm's performance earned head coach Kevin Hoogenboom Regional Coach of the Year honors.

    Lake Erie found itself in big holes early in all three matches Saturday, losing to #7 Findlay (22-14) and King (21-15) before rallying for a 19-16 win over the Lakers in the final home dual of the year. Zak Vargo, Matt Vandermeer and Mikey Samijlenko each went 3-0 on the day to lead Lake Erie.

Sophomore Austin Gillihan upset 7th-ranked Jose Matos at 133 pounds to spark the Storm to their school-record ninth dual win.
