YPISLANTI, MICH. – The Lake Erie College wrestling team opened its 2012-13 season Saturday (Nov. 3) at the 21st installment of the Eastern Michigan University Open at Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Storm sent a contingent of over 30 wrestlers to compete in the two-tier format.
Competing in the Freshmen/Sophomore brackets, sophomore heavyweight Bobby Zappitelli (Painesville Twp., Ohio/Lake Catholic) had the best showing for the Storm, finishing in fourth place in his weight class. Zappitelli posted a 3-2 overall record, advancing to the winners bracket semifinals before ultimately falling by decision to Cleveland State University's Riley Shaw in the third-place bout.
Three other Lake Erie wrestlers reached the placing rounds. Sophomore Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) tied for eighth at 125 pounds, also posting a 3-2 record on the day. Two freshmen – Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and Devin Smith (Salem, Va./Salem) – also earned eighth-place ties at their respective weight classes. Baughman went 3-3 at the EMU Open, including a pin, while Smith won three straight decisions after losing his opening match and finished with a 3-2 record on the day.
Lake Erie had three other wrestlers win multiple matches in the Freshman/Sophomore brackets, but did not reach the place-winner rounds.
In the Open Division, junior Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and redshirt sophomore Mikey Samijlenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) each went 2-2 and tied for eighth place at 157-pounds and 197-pounds, respectively.
Junior Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) also posted a 2-2 mark, but did not qualify for the placing rounds.
The Storm returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the University of Mount Union Invitational in Alliance, Ohio.
