PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Lake Erie College wrestling team returns to the home mat Wednesday night (Jan. 23) to host traditional rival Gannon University in a nonconference dual match on "Youth Wrestling Night" at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Storm (8-3, 1-1 GLIAC) is coming off a 27-17 road win at then 18th-ranked Ashland University last Tuesday (Jan. 15). Lake Erie was listed as the first team under "others receiving votes" in the most recent Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 20 poll and are expected to move up into the national poll following their win over the Eagles.
Sophomore All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and junior Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) are both ranked in the national individual rankings. Vandermeer moved up one spot, from third to second, at 165 pounds and carries a 12-match winning streak into Wednesday night's match. Vargo is making his first appearance this season in the poll, checking in at fifth at 157 pounds. He has won nine of his last 11 matches.
Overall, there are 10 Storm wrestlers with at least 15 individual victories on the season. In addition, the eight dual victories to date tie last year's total for most wins in a single season.
Gannon (1-2, 1-1 PSAC) has dropped two straight duals, both to ranked teams. The Golden Knights won the first two matches Thursday (Jan. 17) but eventually fell at home to No. 7 Kutztown University, 21-13. Jose Matos is ranked second regionally and seventh nationally at 133 pounds, the lone Knight in the national rankings.
As part of the program's annual "Youth Wrestling Night," all youth, middle school and high school wrestling teams and their coaches will be admitted free and will be recognized prior to the start of the match.
Following Wednesday night's dual, the Storm will have a few days off to prepare for Sunday's (Jan. 27) showdown at second-ranked Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio.
