Storm Has Seven in Top Six of Regional Rankings

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Seven Lake Erie College wrestlers are ranked in the top six regionally in the latest NCAA Wrestling Coaches Association Region 2 poll (Jan. 30).

As a team, the Storm is sixth in the region, but has a victory over fourth-ranked Ashland University.

Leading the way individually is sophomore All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) who is second at 165 pounds, both in Region 2 and nationally.  Classmate Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) is fourth at 133 pounds, thanks in large part to a pair of wins over nationally-ranked foes.

Five wrestlers are ranked fifth regionally in their respective weight classes: sophomore Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) at 125 pounds, sophomore Nate Ball (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) at 149 pounds, junior Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) at 157, sophomore Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Lakeland) at 174 and sophomore Mikey Samijlenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) at 197 pounds.

Three others sit just outside the top six.  Freshman Cobey Fehr (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and junior Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) are listed seventh at 141 and 184 pounds, respectively, while freshman heavyweight Almonte Patrick (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) is eighth.

The Storm (10-4 overall) is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9, hosting a quad at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic & Wellness Center at 10 a.m.  Opponents include Mercyhurst University, King College and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival and national seventh-ranked University of Findlay.
