BAY CITY, MICH. – Three members of the Lake Erie College wrestling team earned a spot on the 2013 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Team selected by the league coaches and announced by the conference office Thursday (Feb. 28).
Sophomore Nate Ball (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) was a first-team selection at 149 pounds while sophomore All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and junior Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) were second-team selections.
Ball posted a 21-10 overall record on the season and was 3-1 in GLIAC dual meet action to earn his first all-league honor. Earlier this season he was named the most valuable wrestler at the University of Mount Union Invitational when he went 4-0 to win his weight class.
Vandermeer, who has won 17-of-18 matches and placed sixth at last year's NCAA Championships, is 28-6 this season and went 3-1 in GLIAC dual competition. His only loss in league action was to Joey Davis of Notre Dame College, the nation's top –ranked wrestler at 165 pounds. He was named the GLIAC Wrestler of the Week last week after going 3-0 at the Lake Erie Quad II.
Vargo becomes the first two-time All-GLIAC selection in program history after earning second-team honors at 157 pounds. He was 2-1 this season in conference contests and posted a 22-6 overall mark during the regular season. A year ago he was named the GLIAC Newcomer of the Year at the conference championships.
