BEREA, Ohio-- Nate Ball (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) Bobby Zappitelli (Painesville Twp., Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Keanu Thompson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) finished in the top-six of their weight classes to lead the Lake Erie College wrestling team at the John Summa Memorial Tournament held at Baldwin-Wallace University Saturday (Feb. 8).
Ball had the highest placing for the Storm, finishing second at 157-pounds. Ball opened the tournament with a 7-0 decision over Chris Little of Waynsburg University, followed up by a first-round pin over Baldwin-Wallace's Blake Perry in the second round. In the semifinals, Ball bested another Yellow Jacket, Garrett Chase, 12-5. Ball then fell by decision to Washington and Jefferson College's Josh Etzel.
Zappitelli picked up a third round pin over Ohio Northwestern University's Greg Biben in the opening round, followed by a 3-0 decision over Baldwin-Wallace's Joe Belford in the second round. Zappitelli fell in his semifinal match before losing in an overtime match to place him in the fifth-p,lace match, a rematch with Belford. Once again, Zappitelli bested Belford to take fifth at heavyweight.
125-pounder Thompson picked up a 1-0 decision over the College of Brockport's Matthias Li in the opening round. Thompson then lost by injury default in the semifinals and forfeited his last two matches due to injury but picked up a sixth-place finish.
The Storm is back at home Feb. 20 to host West Liberty University.
