Late Heroics Lift Storm Over West Liberty

PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- Trailing 19-15 heading into the final bout of the evening, Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) picked up a huge pin to give the 18th-ranked Lake Erie College Storm a 21-19 victory over West Liberty University Thursday night (Feb. 20) in Painesville.

West Liberty was deducted two points throughout the match for unsportsmanlike conduct.

"We wrestled some guys that do not normally get time and they performed well," said head Coach Kevin Hoogenboom.  "Zappitelli got the ball rolling with his victory to start the night and Rosborough came through with another huge pin in the clutch to close it out."

The dual kicked-off at heavyweight. At the end of regulation, Bobby Zappitelli (Painesville, Twp., Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Aaron Silverio were tied at one. No points were scored in the first overtime, sending it to a second overtime. Zappitelli scored two points in the first session and kept Silverio off the board in the second session to pick up the decision win. At 125-pounds, Keanu Thompson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) gained in early advantage over Zac Brown. Trailing late in the third round, Brown landed a reversal to take a one point lead, but Thompson's riding time took the match to overtime. In the sudden death session, Thompson took Brown down to pick up the win.

Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) fell behind 2-0 against Bryce Gainer but quickly turned it around, picking up a couple near falls to take a 10-2 lead after the first round. After another near fall in round two, Gainer finally scored an escape, followed takedown to cut the lead to 13-5 heading into the third round. Trailing 14-8 in the third round, Gainer picked up a takedown and pin to score West Liberty's first points of the match.

At 141-pounds, Dylan Kager (Shalersville, Ohio/Crestwood) scored a takedown and three near falls in the opening round to gain an 11-0 lead. In round two, he picked up another takedown and finished the match with a pinfall, increasing the Storm lead to 12-5. Nick Bloch (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had two takedowns and a near fall, as well as an escape, in the opening round at 149-pounds against Dan Carpenter, tallying a 7-3 lead. Bloch continued to build his lead in the second round going into the third but Carpenter was able to comeback and pick up a pin in the third round.

Third-ranked 157-pounder Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) picked up a takedown in the first round against Bryan Skoff to lead 2-0. In round two, Vargo kept Skoff on the mat, picking up the riding time advantage. Vargo kept Skoff down for most of the third round but Skoff picked up a late escape though it was not enough as Vargo won 3-2.

Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) faced Mike Emery at 165-pounds with the Storm ahead 15-10. After a scoreless first round, Tesny picked up an early escape in round two to score the first point but Emery scored a late takedown to gain the lead. Scoring an escape in round three, Emery picked up the decision win.

At 174-pounds, Jacob Brown (Jefferson, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley/Waldorf) went up against Eric Antesberger with the Storm's lead down to 15-13. Antesberger scored the first points of the bout with an escape to start the second round, followed up with a takedown a minute later, en route to a decision victory.

Trailing 16-15, Jared Merritt (Cranesville, Ohio/Northwestern) took Danny Doyle down early at 184-pounds. Up 2-1 entering the second, Merritt scored another point on an escape just four seconds in but Doyle scored a takedown of his own to tie it at three. Merritt escaped once again to take a 4-3 lead into the third round but Doyle picked up a takedown to gain his first lead, 5-4. Merrit was unable to escape Doyle, falling by decision.

The match came down to the 197-pound bout, as the Storm trailed 19-15. Rosborough took Joe Congie down early to gain the advantage. After a near fall, Rosborough muscled Congie down to pick up the first round pin to give the Storm a 21-19 win.

The Storm returns to action Friday (Feb. 21) on the road at Gannon University.
