Storm Falls in Close Battle at Gannon

ERIE, Pa.— For the second straight night, the 18th-ranked Lake Erie College wrestling team's dual came down to the final bout but the Storm were unable to overcome Gannon University, narrowly falling the Golden Knights 23-22 Friday evening (Feb. 21) in Erie, Pa.

After a forfeit at 125-pounds, Gannon's Adam Weinell picked up a second round pin over Keanu Thompson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn) at 133-pounds to extend their lead to 12-0. 

At 141-pounds, Dylan Kager (Shalersville, Ohio/Crestwood) gained a 2-0 advantage over John Marotto in the first round.  Marotto cut the lead down to one after the second round but Kager picked up a quick escape and takedown to start round three en route to a 7-3 decision victory.

Nate Ball (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) returned to the Storm's lineup at 149-pounds but was unable to overcome Roco Wellek, falling by major decision.  Third-ranked Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) owned a 5-2 lead after the first round of the 157-pound bout against Robert Blotzer.  After maintaining that lead in round two, Vargo picked up three points in the final round to take the bout, 8-3. 

Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) struck first in the 165-pound bout with a first round takedown of Casey Pace.  After Pace escaped, Tesny recorded a second takedown to close out the round.  In round two, Tesny closed it out with a quick pin, bringing the dual score to 16-12. 

Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Lakeland) led Christopher Matthews 2-1 after the first round of their 174-pound bout.  Zivcic increased his lead with a quick escape in the second round, followed up by a takedown.  After a big round three, Zivcic secured a 12-4 major decision to tie the dual at 16.

Jared Merritt (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) fell behind early against  Zachary Zelcs at 184-pounds as Zelcs registered a major decision, putting the Golden Knights back in front, 20-16.

At 197-pounds, Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp.,Ohio/Riverside) came through in the clutch for the second straight night, picking up a first round pin over Trevor Beiter as Lake Erie regained the lead. 

The dual came down to the final bout.  Bobby Zappitelli Painesville,Twp., Ohio/Lake Catholic) scored the first points of his heavyweight bout against Nick Budd with an escape in the second round but Budd matched him to tie it up in the third round.  Budd then gained the lead with a takedown but Zappitelli was able to quickly escape, bringing the bout to within one point.  However, Budd was able to stave off Zappitelli for the remainder of the round, to clinch the 23-22 Gannon victory.

The Storm closed out its regular season against Gannon.  They are back in action next weekend (Feb. 28-March 1) at the Super Region Two Championships held in Tiffin, Ohio.
