#9 Storm Falls to #4 Pitt Johnstown

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The ninth-ranked Lake Erie College wrestling team hosted fourth-ranked University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Friday night (Jan. 15) in Painesville.

The Storm fell 27-13. 

The Mountain Cats picked up six points with a forfeit win at 125-pounds.

The 133-pound bout featured Nick Roberts for the Mountain Cats and Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area).  Roberts scored the first points with a takedown but GIllihan quickly escaped.  In the second period, Roberts scored on an escape.   Gillihan cut the lead to one in the third but it was not enough to overcome Roberts' advantage, falling by decision, 4-2.

The 141-pound match featured Joe Davis for the Mountain Cats and Joshua Davis (Haubstadt, Ind./ F. S. Reitz).  Joshua Davis secured a takedown to get the first two points of the match, riding out the remainder of the first period.  He grew his lead to three with an escape to open the second.  Joshua Davis got his second takedown and a two point near fall to move ahead 7-0.  In the third period, Joshua Davis staved off a takedown attempt, completing one of his own.  Joe Davis had a reversal to cut the lead to seven but Joshua Davis had a point of riding time for the major decision, 10-2.

The 149-pound match featured Luke Palamides for the Mountain Cats and Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) for the Storm.  After a scoreless first, Boggs scored the first point with an escape in the second.  Boggs secured a takedown to move to 3-0.  Palamides cut the lead to two with an escape heading into the third.  The lead was cut to one with a Palamides escape in the third but Boggs quickly responded with a takedown.  After an escape, another takedown for Boggs secured the decision, 8-4.

The 157-pound bout featured Luke Devin Austin for the Mountain Cats and Conner Nemec (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) for the Storm.  Austin scored the only points of the first period with a late takedown.  Nemec quickly escaped to open the second, cutting the lead in half.  Austin escaped to start the third, followed by a takedown.    With the point of riding time, Austin secured the 6-1 decision.

The 165-pound match featured Tyler Reinhart for the Mountain Cats and fifth-ranked Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) for the Storm. Reinhart scored an early takedown but Vandermeer provided the escape.  Vandermeer tied it with an escape in the second but Rienhart scored a second takedown.  Reinhart held Vandermeer off the board in the third to secure the 5-2 decision. 

The 174-pound bout featured John Blankenship for the Mountain Cats and eighth-ranked Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) for the Storm.  After a scoreless first, Vandermeer broke the stalemate with a reversal.  Blankenship escaped to cut the lead to one.  Vandermeer increased the lead to three with a nearfall in the third.  Blankenship escaped to cut the lead to one but Vandermeer secured the decision, 5-2. 

The 184-pound match featured second-ranked Travis McKillop for the Mountain Cats and Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) for the Storm. McKillop scored a quick takedown to open the match, working it into a pinfall.

The 197-pound bout featured Jacbob Hart for the Mountain Cats and eighth-ranked Evan Rosborough (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) for the Storm.  Rosborough scored the first points with a takedown, met by an escape.  In the final seconds of the period, Rosborough secured his second takedown.   Hart scored the only point of the second with an escape.  Rosborough escaped in the third to increase his lead to three.  Another takedown and a riding time point gave Rosborough an 8-2 decision.

The heavyweight match featured third-ranked D.J. Sims for the Mountain Cats and Noah Hosking (Milford, Mich./Milford) for the Storm.   Sims secured a takedown late in the first to open the scoring.  Early in the second, Hosking escaped to cut the lead to one.  Sims landed a second takedown, leading to a pinfall to secure the Mountain Cat win.

The Storm is back in action Saturday (Jan. 16) at Ashland University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Dual.
