YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Lake Erie College wrestling team opened the 2016-17 regular season at the Eastern Michigan Open, hosted by Eastern Michigan University. The Storm faced off against talent from Division I and Division II schools.
184-pounder Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) led the Storm with a fourth place finish in his weight class. Hughes won his first two matches of the day by decision, moving him on to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal, Hughes defeated Nick May of Michigan State by a 3-2 decision. Going against Domenic Abounader from the University of Michigan in the semis, Hughes fell by a 10-2 major decision. He finished his day with a fourth place finish as he was defeated by Jack Rozema of Ohio State University with a 8-5 decision.
149-pounder Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) lost his first match of the day by technical fall against Micah Jordan of Ohio State. After a bye in the first consolation round, Boggs defeated Adam Kirresh by a technical fall. He pinned Jackson Gallagher (Indiana) in the second round of the third consolation round. Zac Hall of Michigan defeated Boggs in the fourth consolation round with a 18-5 major decision.
133-pounder Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) opened the day with a 14-11 decision over Jon Martin of Central Michigan. He got a 11-3 major decision over Rico Puente from Tiffin. In the quarterfinal, Mario Guillen (Ohio) defeated Lieb 11-4. In his first consolation bout, Lieb was pinned by Alijah Jeffery from Northern Illinois at the 35 second mark.
The Storm will be back in action on November 12th as the team will travel to Mount Union for the Mount Union Invitational.
