PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College wrestling team will return to action following a two-week break with a trip to Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Storm will be one of 39 teams that will participate in the 38th Annual Midwest Classic on Saturday (Dec. 17) and Sunday (Dec. 18). The two-day tournament will be held at the University of Indianapolis.
With 39 different teams participating, Lake Erie head coach Kevin Hoogenboom sees this weekend as a chance to examine the Storm wrestling team as a whole. "The Midwest Classic is a great opportunity to see where we stand on a national level," said Hoogenboom.
14 of the top 25 teams that were ranked in the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll released Tuesday (Dec. 13) will be part of the event. Six of the top ten teams will be represented, including Maryville, Mercyhurst and Pitt.-Johnstown.
The Storm found a spot in the rankings as Lake Erie moved up to the 21st spot in the country, tied with UNC-Pembroke.
Three Storm wrestlers were ranked in the NWCA DII individual rankings. Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) is ranked 9th in the 149-pound weight class. Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) is the highest Storm wrestler, coming in at 7th in the 184-pound weight class. Evan Rosborough (Concord Township, Ohio / Riverside) is ranked 11th in the weight class of 197 pounds.
The Storm has wrestled in four opens this season so far, including the Storm Open that Lake Erie hosted two weeks ago.
"This will be the first time this season that we have our full lineup wrestling so we are excited to compete as a full team," added Hoogenboom.
