Storm Drops Senior Night Dual on Criteria to Gannon

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College wrestling team dropped the Senior Night dual against Gannon University based off of the fourth tie-breaker criteria. The Storm and Golden Knights were knotted at 22-22 following the heavyweight match on Wednesday (Feb. 15).

The match went to the tie-breaker criteria to determine a winner. After the first three criteria still had the match tied, the Golden Knights won the fourth criteria. The fourth criteria is the number of near fall points in the match. Gannon had five near falls for 18 points while Lake Erie had five near falls for 16 points.

The dual was a back and forth battle between the two teams.

Gannon opened the night with a fall by Abraham Guarriello against eighth-ranked Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) at 125 pounds. Guarriello pinned Glogouski in the first period.

Lake Erie answered at 133 pounds as Andrew Leib (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) controlled the matchup against Casey Vollmer. Lieb began the match with a takedown and a four point near fall. Vollmer got a reversal before Lieb answered with a reversal of his own into a pin.

With the match tied 6-6, Gannon got a major decision at 141 pounds. John Marotto defeated Zach Ruggles (Marietta, N.Y. / Marcellus) by an 18-6 major decision.

Second-ranked Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) tied the match at ten with a major decision at 149 pounds. Boggs totaled five takedowns, including two each in the first and second periods. Boggs added a riding point in the third and won by a 12-2 major decision.

At 157 pounds, 12th-ranked Eric Lewandowski battled Josh Pappas (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake)/ Lewandowski got a technical fall against Pappas as Gannon took a 15-10 lead.

Seventh-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) faced off against Garrett Smith for Gannon. After a scoreless first period, Vandermeer gained control in the second period with a reversal, a takedown and two near falls. Vandermeer then scored a key takedown and riding time point in the third, securing a 13-4 major decision.

Brendan Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) took on Jake Stratton for the Golden Knights. Winning fell behind 5-3 in the first period before Stratton gained some takedowns in the second period. Winning could not answer Stratton in the third period in an 18-10 major decision for Stratton. Through seven matches, the Golden Knights led 19-14.

11th-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) went up against Christopher Matthews at 184 pounds. In a close match, Hughes got an escape point and a riding time point as he clinched a 2-0 decision.

Evan Rosborough (Concord Township, Ohio / Riverside) took part in his Senior Night with a match against reigning PSAC Player of the Week Ethan Budd. Rosborough took control early with a takedown and a four point near fall. He added three more takedowns in the match before two straight near falls earned him his 94th career win on Senior Night. Rosborough's 19-2 tech fall put the Storm up 22-19.

At heavyweight, Brandon Houle (Sparta, Mich. / Rockford / Hope) went up against Nick Budd. Houle opened the match with a takedown. Budd tied the match with two escapes. With the match tied 2-2, Budd earned a 3-2 decision with a crucial riding time point. That tied the dual at 22, going to the criteria.

Lake Erie will return to Indianapolis, Indiana next week for the Super Region 2 Championships.
