KENT, Ohio- The Lake Erie College wrestling team opened the 2017-18 season with three matches at Kent State University on Friday (Nov. 3) afternoon.
The Storm opened the day with a 38-3 loss to Kent State. Lake Erie defeated Kent State Tuscarawas 42-3 in the second round of the day. Lake Erie took on Mercyhurst North East in the third match of the day, a 45-6 win for Lake Erie.
Lake Erie fell to Division-I Kent State in the opening dual 38-3. The Storm picked up three points as Seventh-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) defeated Shane Mast by a 9-3 decision at 184 pounds.
The Storm won nine of the ten matches against Kent State Tuscarawas, totaling a 42-6 victory. Sixth-ranked Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield), Zane Johnson (Plain City, Ohio / Jonathan Alder), Hughes and Brandon Houle (Sparta, Mich. / Rockford / Hope) all had pinfall victories in the match. John Siemasz (Livonia, Mich.) won with a technical fall and Sonny Lucas (Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) won by a major decision.
Lake Erie used nine match victories in the final dual as they defeated Mercyhurst North East 45-6. Five different wrestlers had pinfall wins for Lake Erie including Glogouski, Johnson, Sean O'Hearon (Albion, Mich.), Hughes and Houle. Seventh-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Oxford / Limestone) picked up a technical fall victory and Siemasz won by a major decision.
Hughes ended his day with a 3-0 record with two wins by fall. Glogouski, Johnson and Houle all went 2-1 with two pinfalls each.
The Storm will return to the mat at the Michigan State Open on Sunday (Nov. 5).
