Wrestling to Compete at Midwest Classic (Preview)

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College wrestling team will conclude the 2017 calendar year competing at the 39th annual Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis on Saturday (Dec. 16) and Sunday (Dec. 17). Action begins on Saturday at 10:00 AM across eight mats. Results 

The Storm will be in action with 34 other teams at the Midwest Classic this weekend. There will be no shortage of quality talent as 15 teams of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches' Association Poll Top 25 will be represented. On top of the 15 ranked teams, nine teams are receiving votes in the coaches' poll. Four of the top ten ranked teams will be in action. On the individual end, every weight class will have at least three nationally ranked wrestlers competing.

"We are working towards being 100% and the Midwest Classic will give us a great opportunity to improve," said Storm head coach Kevin Hoogenboom. "Every match this weekend will be highly contested. I'm excited for our guys who are healthy and have been working hard this season."

This weekend, Lake Erie has five wrestlers seeded in the bracket. Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) is seeded fourth in the 125-pound weight class. Sean O'Hearon (Albion, Mich. / -) is the ninth seed in the 141-pound weight class. John Siemasz (Livonia, Mich. / -) is the 12th seed at 149-pounds. Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) enters the weekend as the third seed at 165-pounds. Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) is the fourth seed in the 184-pound weight class.

Storm Report: Lake Erie hosted the fifth annual Storm Open on December 3rd. Six wrestlers placed for the Storm in the event that featured over 221 wrestlers.

National Rankings: Lake Erie improved their national ranking and had four wrestlers rank in the latest edition of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches' Association Poll, released November 24th. The Storm is now tied for 15th, up from 18th in the preseason poll. B. Glogouski is ranked 5th in the 125 pound weight class. O'Hearon is slotted 12th in the 141 pound class. 165-pounder is 6th in the nation while Hughes is eighth in the 184-pound weight class.

Super Region 2 Rankings: The Storm was ranked fourth of 13 teams in the Super Region 2 Rankings with seven individual wrestlers ranked, released on November 22nd. B. Glogouski is the top ranked grappler in the 125 pound class. Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) is sixth in the 133 pound weight class. O'Hearon enters the regional rankings at 141 pounds in second with Siemasz ranked third at 149 pounds. Vandermeer is sixth at 165 pounds, Hughes is second at 184 pounds, Palser is eighth at 197 pounds and Brandon Houle (Sparta, Mich. / Rockford / Hope) is sixth at heavyweight.

Flashback: The Storm competed at the Midwest Classic last season and the Storm had four wrestlers place in the top eight. Lake Erie finished ninth overall out of 38 teams.

Storm Forecast: Lake Erie will return to the mat after the New Year as the Storm will compete at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana on January 4th and 5th.
