INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Lake Erie College wrestling team concluded the 39th annual Midwest Classic on Sunday (Dec. 17) at Nicoson Hall at the University of Indianapolis.
Three Storm grapplers competed on day two of the tournament. Sixth-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) finished second at 165 pounds and eighth-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) placed third at 184 pounds.
165-pounder Vandermeer began Sunday with a 3-2 decision victory over the fourth-ranked Alonzo Turner of Findlay in the semifinal. He battled against third-ranked Bret Romanzak of Ashland in the final but fell by a 5-3 decision. Vandermeer ended the weekend with a 4-1 record.
Hughes dropped his first match on Sunday, the semifinal against seventh-ranked Brad Metz from Findlay. Hughes was defeated by a 5-2 decision. He battled back into the third place match with a third period victory by fall against Connor Price of Wisconsin-Parkside. Hughes locked down third on the podium with a 6-4 decision triumph against Newman's Noel Torres. Hughes finished 4-1 for the weekend at 184 pounds.
Jesse Palser (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield) fell in the fourth consolation round on Sunday as he was defeated by ninth-ranked James Lehman of Wisconsin-Parkside by a 3-1 decision.
The Storm finished 16th of 35 teams this weekend with 39.5 points.
Lake Erie will return to the mat the first weekend of January at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana on January 4th.
