PAINESVILLE, OHIO - After making a pair of saves in the first 45 minutes of action, Lake Erie senior Chelsea Giesen (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley) shifted to the front of the Storm's lineup after halftime. The move worked as Giesen headed a ball into the net in the 99th minute to give the Lake Erie women's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory over Point Park University tonight (Sept. 4) at LaRoche College in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Freshman midfielder Valerie Urbanik (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) scored a goal and assisted on Giesen's winner for the Storm (1-1) which picked up its first win of the season.
Freshman Jaimie Nelson (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas) took over for Giesen in goal and made six saves in her first varsity action. Overall, Lake Erie goalies made eight saves on the night.
Point Park (0-1) took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Erica Mikolay at 22:11. The score remained that way until Urbanik connected from 25 yards out to tie the score in the 67th minute.
The two teams then played scoreless ball for just over 30 minutes before Giesen headed in Urbanik's free kick to set off a Storm celebration.
Lake Erie outshot Point Park 17-12 in the match, but Point Park's Liz Velez made 13 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
The Storm returns to that same pitch tomorrow, Sept. 5, when they play host LaRoche College at 1 p.m.
