PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College women's soccer team kick off the season Thursday (Aug. 30) against traditional nonconference rival Gannon University in Erie, Pa. at 1 p.m. The Storm enter year two under head coach Jamie Shadd-Matson and are aiming for marked improvement heading into 2012 and will also play on Saturday, Sept. 1, in Erie against Edinboro University.
The Storm are looking to capitalize off the experience of their returners. Lake Erie returns 14 players from last year's squad. Junior goalkeeper Megan Baldacci (Cavecreek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) will lead the Storm on defense. Baldacci made 142 saves in the 2011 and recorded two shut outs. Sophomore Meghan Ambrose (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Charles F. Brusch) also returns on defense. Ambrose led the Storm with three goals last year. Juniors Ally Miller (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood), Robin Hames (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby), and Paige Nemec (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) return on the offensive side of the ball. This trio played in all 18 games for the Storm last season.
The Golden Knights look to build off of a solid 2011 campaign. Gannon returns many key starters, including fifth-year senior goalkeeper Maggie Brinkman and sophomore midfielder Justine Rodrigues. The Golden Knights welcome 12 freshmen to the squad.
After the opening weekend swing through Northwest Pennsylvania, the Storm travel to the southern part of the Keystone State on Thursday, Sept. 6, for a nonconference match at Seton Hill University.
