Storm Come Up Short Against Michigan Tech

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College volleyball team (2-7, 0-4 GLIAC) fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Michigan Technological University (5-7, 2-2 GLIAC) 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-14) on Saturday (Sept. 22) at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center in Painesville.

The Huskies jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before the Storm tied it up at 10. The Huskies responded with a 6-3 run. Following a timeout, the Storm came within one point, 18-17, but the Huskies closed out the first set 25-21. Junior Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) recorded three kills in the set while senior Rachel Ritt (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) led the Storm with six digs.

The teams traded points in the early portion of the second set. Tied at 16, the Huskies went on a 7-2 run to take a 23-18 lead. The Storm did not go out without a fight, coming within three points before falling 25-21 in the second set. Sophomore Samantha Knepley (Munith, Mich./Stockbridge) tallied three kills and four digs in the set.

Michigan Tech carried the momentum over from the second set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead in the third set. The fast start proved to be too much for the Storm, dropping the third set 25-14.

Junior Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Cldye) finished the match with 10 kills to lead the Storm, while Richardson finished with eight. Ritt and Knepley combined for 23 digs-12 and 11 respectively.

The Huskies were led by nine kills from Jordanna Kero. Jacqueline Aird recorded 11 digs, and Shelby Jones tallied five aces.

The Storm wrap-up its three-game GLIAC home stand on Tuesday (Sept. 25) against Ashland University (9-2, 2-1 GLIAC) at 7 p.m. in the Jerome T. Osborne Athletic Family and Wellness Center.
