Storm Come Up Short at Home Against Tiffn

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College volleyball continued the last leg of their 2012 season with a straight sets loss against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Tiffin University in Painesville on Saturday (Nov. 3).

Tiffin (9-19, 2-14 GLIAC) won the sets 29-27, 25-18, 25-22.

The teams exchanged points early in the first set until the Storm gained a 9-6 advantage. The Storm held the advantage throughout most of the first set but Tiffin kept it close, coming within one at 19-18. After a Storm timeout, the Dragons tied it up at 19, and gained the lead at 20-19. The Storm responded by tying the contest at 21. The Dragons once again gained the advantage after the tie, going ahead 22-21. After Lake Erie tied it up on the following point, Tiffin once again took a one point lead, only for the Storm to tie it right back up. Tied at 24, the Dragons gained a set point, but were unable to capitalize as the Storm tied it at 25. The Dragons gained a second set point at 26-25, but were unable to convert once again. The Dragons would fail to convert on a third set point chance, but were finally able to close out the set on their fourth attempt, winning the opening set 29-27. Junior Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) led the Storm with six kills in the set.

The two teams were even throughout the second set, with neither gaining a distinct advantage until Tiffin gained a 20-16 advantage, and eventually a 25-18 set win. Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) led the Storm with three kills and six digs in the second set.

The third set started in a similar fashion to the second with the teams evenly matched, but the Storm found the advantage this time, gaining an 11-8 edge. The Dragons tied it up at 11 and eventually took the lead at 17-16. Following their timeout, the Storm charged back to take a 21-19 lead but the Dragons tied it at 21 following a timeout of their own, and sealed the victory with a 25-22 third set win.

Richardson led the Storm on offense with 14 kills while Hoppe led the defense with 11 digs and added eight kills for the offense. Kathryn Ferry (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) added nine digs and Sara Aultz (Wooster, Ohio/Orrville) tallied seven kills and two blocks.

The Storm return to action next Friday (Nov. 9), playing host to the University of Findlay in a GLIAC matchup at 7 pm.
