PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College volleyball team was unable to pick up a win against Ashland University Tuesday night (Sept. 23), falling to the Eagles in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
The Eagles won the sets 25-12, 25-14 and 25-20.
The teams traded points early in the opening set but Ashland slowly inched ahead and eventually took control, winning the first set 25-12.
Samantha Knepley (Munith, Mich./Stockbridge) led the Storm with three kills in the opening set while her, Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich./Saline) and Kathryn Ferry (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) had a pair of digs each.
Once again, the Storm and Eagles were even early in the second set. With a 9-8 advantage, the Eagles rattled off three straight points, bringing about a timeout from the Storm. The timeout failed to quench Ashland's momentum as they captured the second set, 25-14.
Asya Hobbs (Lynwood, Ill./Bishop Noll) led the Storm with a pair of kills in the second set while Ferry and Knepley had two digs each.
After a back-and-forth start to the third set, the Eagles slowly started to pull away from the Storm but they did not go down without a fight. The Storm cut the Eagles advantage down to four, 23-19, late in the third set after trailing by seven but the Eagles clinched the match with a 25-20 set win.
Hobbs led the Storm with six kills and five digs. Madison Russell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) had five kills while Sara Aultz (Wooster, Ohio/Orrville) had four. Knepley ended the game with four digs, three kills and 14 assists while Ferry had four digs.
The Storm is back in action this weekend, heading north to face Northwood University and Lake Superior State University Friday (Sept. 26) and Saturday (Sept. 27).
