Storm Grounds Eagles in Home Finale

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College volleyball team was victorious toady over Ashland University in five sets. With the win the Storm improves to 7-17 overall and 2-12 in the conference and with the loss the Eagles fall to 18-7 overall and 11-3 in conference play.  This marks the first win for the Storm over the GLIAC South Division leading Eagles in school history.   

After Ashland scored the first point of the match the Storm responded with three straight points, with Madison Russell (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South) leading the way with a kill and a block.  However, Ashland regained their footing and won the first set, (25-19).  Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) led the way for the Storm in the first set with a team high four digs and two kills.  

The second set started when the Storm took a 4-2 advantage, behind a key Leondra Barrett (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Ooltewah) block.  The Eagles overcame the early deficit and forced a Lake Erie timeout, with the score 11-6 in favor of Ashland.  The Storm rallied after the timeout to tie the game at 19 points apiece. Lake Erie rode their moment, and the Storm won the second set, (27-25).  Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) led the way in for Lake Erie in the second set with seven digs and four assists.

Ashland jumped out to a lead early in the third set and maintained their lead to win the third set, (25-10).

Both teams battled to start the fourth set before the Storm stretched the lead to 12-8, which forced an Eagles timeout.  The Storm continued to stretch the lead with a 4-0 run that forced a second Ashland timeout, with the score 21-16 in favor of Lake Erie. The Storm maintained their lead and won the fourth set, (25-20).  Courtney Stedman (Mount Prospect, Ill. / Hersey), Barrett, and Kedroske, each tallied a four kills in the set.    

The Storm jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the final frame, and kept the pressure on to take a 9-5 lead, which forced an Ashland timeout.  Lake Erie forced a second Ashland timeout, when they took a 13-8 advantage.  The Storm held on to win the final set, (15-10) and defeated the Eagles, 3-2. 

Offensively the Storm was led by Stedman, Barrett, and Kedroske who each tallied double digit kills, with 13, 11, and 10 respectively.

Defensively, the Storm was led by Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) who had a team high 18 digs in the match.  In addition to Fletcher, Thomas pitched in with 16 digs in the match for the Storm.    

Lake Erie will be back in action Friday (November 6th) when they travel to take on Ohio Dominican at 7 P.M.
