PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team treated the fans at the Osborne Center on Friday (Sept. 30) night to two comebacks in a five set match against the Ferris State Bulldogs.
Ferris State pulled away in the fifth and final set for a 3-2 (12-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-21, 8-15) win over the Storm. Lake Erie fell to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the GLIAC.
Lake Erie and Ferris State went back and forth to open the match as they stayed close. After a Lake Erie kill made it 7-5 Bulldogs, Ferris State went on an 18-7 run to cruise to a set one victory.
In set two, Lake Erie used back-to-back kills from Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) to take a 5-4 lead. Ferris State went on a run to open an 18-12 lead in the set. Two straight errors forced Lake Erie to call a timeout down five, at 20-15. After the timeout, the Storm raged back to pull within one at 23-22. With Ferris State reaching a set point opportunity, Lake Erie called a second timeout. Lake Erie rallied for a set two 26-24 victory as they scored four straight points.
Opening the third set, neither team led by more than one when Lake Erie tied the game at seven. Ferris State ran five straight points, leading into a timeout. The Bulldogs added more pressure following the timeout as they opened their largest lead of the set, nine, en route to a 25-18 victory in set three.
In set four, a five point Lake Erie run turned an 8-6 deficit into an 11-8 Storm lead before a timeout. From that point forward, Lake Erie held the lead by as much as six. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio/Dalton) ended the fourth set with a huge kill that forced the fifth set by a 25-21 score.
The Bulldogs had the momentum throughout the fifth set as they took the final set 15-8 and the match 3-2.
Four different Storm players ended with double-digit kill totals. Fisher ended with 13 kills while Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) had 12 kills and a team high .290 hitting percentage. Lee Lee Barrett (Chattanooga, Tenn. /Ooltewah) had 11 kills and three blocks on defense. Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. /Holt) had a double-double with ten kills and ten digs.
Morgan Briggs (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) led the Storm defense with 25 digs. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. /Saline) finished with 14 digs and Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Fairfield) added 15 digs.
The Storm will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 1) against Grand Valley State at home.
