Lake Erie Concludes Ashland Tourney with Split

ASHLAND, Ohio- After a split on day one, the Lake Erie College Storm volleyball team finished the 2017 Quality Inn Ashland University Tournament with another split on Saturday (Sept. 2) afternoon.

Lake Erie defeated Urbana 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 26-24) and then fell to the host Ashland in the final match of the weekend 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 17-25).

"Very proud of the way our team played today and this weekend. Fantastic competition and a great environment. I saw a number of girls step up in big ways, including Sidney Fletcher and Bethany Fisher, who had incredible weekends. We are excited to start preparing for another tough weekend ahead of us," said Storm head coach Kevin Foeman. 

Bethany Fisher was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performances in the four matches. 


Lake Erie tied the first set at five off of a kill by Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt). Urbana went on a 8-1 run, taking a 13-6 less. The Storm scored four straight points to cut the lead to three. Lake Erie continued to chip away at the lead, getting as close as 22-20. The Blue Streaks scored the final three points to win the first set 25-20.

The Storm jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Urbana scored six of the next seven points for a 7-5 lead. Two Storm kills and two errors gave the Storm a 9-7 lead. Later in the set, Lake Erie took advantage of a service error that tied the set at 12. An ace by Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) capped a Storm 13-5 run, ending the set 25-17.

The third set was a back and forth affair with both teams exchanging points. Lake Erie used two separate three point swings to keep the match close. After Urbana took a 17-15 lead, the Storm used four straight points for a 19-17 lead. Urbana cut the lead to one but Lake Erie hung on for the 25-23 third set win.

In the fourth set, the two teams were tied 4-4 when Lake Erie pushed the lead to 8-4. Urbana rallied with five of the next six points, tying the game at nine. A kill by Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) pushed the Storm lead to 16-13. The Blue Streaks used a five point spurt to take a 18-16 lead. Late in the set, Urbana was as close as 23-20 but Lake Erie clinched the match with a 6-1 run. The Storm won the match with a 26-24 fourth set victory.

Fisher led the Storm with 19 kills on offense. Peiffer added a double-double with 11 kills and ten digs. Thomas made 24 assists along with her six digs. Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) had 17 assists and eight digs. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline)led the Storm defense with 22 digs, a game-high. Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) had three solo blocks and four block assists.


Ashland used a 8-3 run to open the first set before Lake Erie cut the lead to three at 10-7. Four straight Eagle points pushed the lead to 14-7. The Storm continued to chip away at the Eagles and pulled within two towards the end of the match. Lake Erie cut the deficit to 23-21 but Ashland ended the set with the final two points, taking set one 25-21

The Eagles opened an early 7-3 lead in the second set before the Storm scored six of the next eight points, tying the set at nine apiece. Ashland pulled ahead and kept distance with the Storm. Ashland got their largest lead of the set at 22-18. Fisher had three kills and Lake Erie took advantage of some Ashland errors on a 7-1 run to win the second set 25-23.

Lake Erie led the third set 4-3 before Ashland regained a 8-5 lead. The Eagles pushed the advantage to four points at 11-7 until Lake Erie used a 7-3 spurt to tie the set at 14 all. After an Ashland timeout, the Eagles led 19-16 and Lake Erie regained the lead with four straight points. The host used a late run to take the lead and hold the Storm at bay. The Eagles took the third set 25-23.

Lake Erie scored the first three points in the fourth set before Ashland emerged with a 6-1 run. The Storm cut the lead to one at 10-9 but Ashland pulled away throughout the set, winning the final set 25-17.

Fisher led the Storm with 15 kills while Peiffer and Courtney Rosebrook (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) each tallied 12 kills. Peiffer also added ten digs. Thomas had 31 assists and 11 digs and Zumack was second with 20 assists. Fletcher was key on defense as she led all players with 30 digs in the match. Morgan Briggs (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) was one of four players with double-digit digs as she had 12.

The Storm will be back in action next weekend as they will play in the Cal Vulcan Invitational at California (Pa.).
