CALIFORNIA, PA. - The Lake Erie College volleyball team was in action today as they split their first day of action at the Vulcan Invite. The Storm opened the day with a victory over Daemen College, 3-1 before falling to Fairmont State in the night cap, 3-1.
The Storm opened the first set as they scored the first two points of the set. The Wildcats answered with a 5-1 run to take the lead, 5-3 in the first set. The Storm battled back and tied the first set at 14 points apiece. The Storm gained the lead and never relinquished the lead again in the first set. Lake Erie won the first set, 25-20.
The beginning of the second set was a back and forth battle. The Storm pulled away in the middle of the set with a 5-1 run to take a 16-10 stranglehold on the second set. Lake Erie closed out the set with ease as they won, 25-18.
The Wildcats jumped on the Storm early in the third set as they quickly grabbed a 10-2 lead over the Storm. The Storm battled but dropped the third set, 25-14.
Lake Erie responded in the fourth set with an 11-4 run to open the fourth frame. The Storm never allowed Daemen back into the final set and won the fourth set, 25-16 and won the match, 3-1.
The Storm offense was led by Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) and Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) as each had double digit kills. Fisher tallied 15 kills as Peiffer added 11 kills and three service aces for the Storm. Defensively, Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) led Lake Erie as she had 14 digs in the match.
In the second game, the first set was a back and forth battle as the game was tied at nine different points in the first set. The first set needed extra points to find a winner before the Storm prevailed to win, 28-26.
The Fighting Falcons took an early lead in the second set as they scored the first four points to open the set. Fairmont State pulled away later in the set and took the second frame, 25-13.
In the third set the Storm showed some fight as they opened the third set strong, and took a 7-4 early in the frame. The Fighting Falcons managed to battle back and took the third set, 25-23.
The Storm fought hard in the final set all the way until the end but could not overcome the deficit and lost the set, 25-20, and lost the match, 3-1.
In game two the Storm was led by Fisher once again as she hammered home 17 kills. Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) pitched in as she added 14 kills to the offensive attack. Defensively the Storm was anchored by Fletcher as she had a game high 27 digs in the match. Morgan Briggs (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) added to the defense as she tallied 19 digs in the match.
Lake Erie will be back in action tomorrow when they compete in the second day of the Vulcan Invite. The Storm will compete against Cal Pa. and Le Monye with the games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
