Lake Erie Sweeps Flagler, Alderson Broaddus

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team hosted two teams as a part of a doubleheader on Friday (Sept. 15) at the Osborne Center.

Lake Erie knocked off Flagler College 3-1 (25-15, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21) in the opener before sweeping Alderson Broaddus University in the nightcap 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-19) for a Great Midwest victory.


The teams tied six times in the first set before the Storm started to gain some traction. After Flagler cut the lead to 11-10, the Storm scored four of the next five points to force a Saints timeout. With a 15-11 lead, the Storm pushed the lead to 18-12. Leading 20-15, Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield)made a service ace that caused the Saints to take another timeout. Lake Erie scored the next four consecutive points for a 25-15 set one win.

Flagler rebounded from an early 3-0 deficit with a 6-1 run that pushed a two point advantage. The Saints expanded the lead to four at 11-7. Lake Erie responded with a 6-2 lead that tied the set at 13. The Storm tried to pull away but Flagler kept close. With a 19-17 lead, the Saints answered with four straight points to take a 21-19 lead. Lake Erie fought back with a 7-3 lead and took the second set in extra points 26-24.

After an early 3-3 tie, the Saints pushed the lead to six with a 7-1 run. Flagler continued to push the lead to as many as eight before Lake Erie took a timeout. A 9-4 run after the timeout, capped by a kill from Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) cut the Saints lead to 21-18. Flagler went on to win the set 25-19.

Flagler got an early start in the fourth set with a 4-1 lead. Lake Erie chipped the lead down to one before an error and a kill from Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) gave the Storm a 9-8 lead. The teams kept close and tied six times before a Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) kill gave the Storm a lead for good at 17-16. Kedroske forced a timeout with the lead at 21-18. Kedroske struck again with the match clinching kill as the Storm won the fourth set 25-21.

Peiffer finished with 18 kills in the match along with seven digs. Fisher added 16 kills on offense. Thomas has assists on 27 points with 15 digs and three service aces. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) had 14 digs and eight assists.


A Fisher kill gave an early 3-1 lead in the first set before the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus tied the set at six. Four straight points gave the Storm a 10-6 lead. The Storm dominated the remainder of the first set with a 14-4 run that ended the set in favor of the Storm 25-11.

The teams stayed close throughout the outset of the second set as the teams stayed within a couple of points. Back-to-back Battler errors gave the Storm an 8-6 lead. Alderson Broaddus tied the set at ten before the Storm went on a 6-1 run, causing a timeout by AB. Lake Erie pulled away in the final points of the set, using a 9-6 spurt that clinched the set 25-17.

Alderson Broaddus jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set. Lake Erie responded with a 6-3 rally that forced a timeout. Out of the timeout, Fisher made a kill that tied the set at ten. Three straight points gave the Storm a 13-10 lead. The Storm pushed the advantage to six throughout the set before Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) ended the match with a kill. Lake Erie swept the match with a 25-19 win in the final set.

Peiffer and Fisher led the Storm with seven kills each in the match. Lombardo added six kills. Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) assisted on 17 points while Sidney Fletcher had 15 digs on defense with three service aces.

The Storm will finish a four-game home stand with a match against Ohio Valley on Saturday (Sept. 16) at 1:00 PM.
