Storm Concludes Crossover With 3-1 Win

AURORA, Ill. – The Lake Erie College volleyball team concluded play at the 2017 Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon with a matchup with the Drury University Panthers.

Lake Erie completed the weekend with a 2-1 record after a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 26-24) win over Drury. The Storm's 2-1 record was tied for second best in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Storm fell behind 3-1 early before the Storm used three straight points to take a 7-6 lead. The Panthers used a 10-3 run to push the lead to 19-10, the largest lead of the set. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) had two kills and assisted on a block as the Storm got four straight points, forcing a timeout by the Panthers. The Panthers had four straight points following the timeout, regaining a nine point lead. Lake Erie had a late 5-0 run but Drury won the first set 25-21.

Drury led the second set 4-1 early but three straight kills, two from Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter), tied the set at four. The teams exchanged points as neither team led by more than two until Drury took a 13-10 lead with three straight points. Fisher struck again with two kills and a block assist as the Storm tied the set at 14 all. Drury took one final lead late in the set but the Storm quickly erased the deficit. After Drury tied the set at 20, Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) had two kills as the Storm closed out the set with a 25-22 win.

Lake Erie started with a 3-0 lead in the third set before pushing the advantage to 10-4. The Panthers cut the deficit to five before the Storm used four straight points for a 16-7 advantage. Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) had a kill, block assist and an ace during the run. Drury got as close as five points before Peiffer ended the threat with a kill and a 25-18 Storm win in set three.

Lake Erie took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set but the Panthers responded with an 11-3 rally and a 12-7 lead. Drury extended the advantage to seven at 20-13 as Lake Erie took their final timeout. Lake Erie scored five of the next six points as they trimmed the lead to three points at 21-18. An 8-3 run, featuring six straight Lake Erie points clinched the second come-from-behind victory of the weekend. Lake Erie won the fourth set in extra points 26-24.

Fisher led the Storm with 14 kills and five block assists. Peiffer had her third double-double of the weekend with 13 kills and 16 digs. Kedroske added a double-double as well with 12 kills and 17 digs, along with four block assists. Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) assisted on 25 Storm points and dug out 22 attack attempts. Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) had 21 assists and eight digs. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) led the Storm with 27 digs.

The Storm had one solo block and 26 assisted blocks for a total of 14 team blocks in the match. Lombardo assisted on nine blocks, a team-high.

Lake Erie returns home to the Osborne Center for a tri-match on Tuesday (Oct. 17) with Roberts Wesleyan and Notre Dame College. The Storm faces Roberts Wesleyan at 3:30 PM and Notre Dame College at 8:00 PM.
