Volleyball Defeats Arrows in Three Set Sweep

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team opened the final three game stretch of the 2017 regular season with a Great Midwest matchup with the Ursuline College Arrows on Saturday (Nov. 4) evening.

The Storm defeated the Arrows 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-17) at the Osborne Center.

Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) had three kills as the Storm opened the match with a 6-1 run over Ursuline. With a 13-8 lead, Ursuline pulled within two points with a 4-1 run. Ursuline closed the lead to 14-12. Lake Erie answered with three straight points, regaining a five point lead at 17-12. Ursuline closed within two points twice more but the Storm pulled away late in the set. Shannon Holsinger (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) ended the set with a kill, for a 25-20 set one victory.

Lake Erie sped out of the gates in the second set as Lake Erie led 6-1 over the Arrows. Fisher and Courtney Rosebrook (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) combined on two blocks as the Storm led by five early. After an Ursuline point, Lake Erie pulled away with a 9-2 run that forced an Arrows timeout. Lake Erie led by ten, 16-6 at the timeout. The Storm led by as many as 13 in the set as they won the second set 25-16 following a Holsinger kill.

The Arrows led 3-1 early in the third set. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) had two service aces as Lake Erie responded with six consecutive points, all a part of a 10-3 Storm run. The run forced a timeout as Lake Erie led 11-6. The Storm pushed the lead to seven with a kill by Fisher as Ursuline took their second timeout. The Arrows pulled within four points until Lake Erie closed the set with a 6-2 run. Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) capped the match with her sixth kill of the set. The Storm won 25-17 in set three.

Peiffer and Fisher each led the Storm with 13 kills. Holsinger had six kills in the match. Rosebrook added five kills and three block assists. Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) had 23 assists and eight digs while Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) assisted on 13 points. Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) had a team-high 12 digs while Fletcher added nine digs on defense.

The Storm will return to the Osborne Center for the penultimate match of the 2017 regular season against Walsh on Friday (Nov. 10) for Senior Night.
