PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's volleyball team defeated the Walsh University Cavaliers on Friday (Nov. 10) night at the Osborne Center.
The 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-12) win over the Cavaliers clinched the East Division title for the Storm on Senior Night, the first Division title in program history.
Walsh won the first point of the match before Lake Erie responded with a 6-0 run. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) had two kills and Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) had two service aces as Lake Erie took a 6-1 lead. The Cavaliers closed the lead to two but then Lake Erie used a 5-0 run, forcing a Walsh timeout. Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) combined on two blocks along with a kill as Lake Erie took a 13-6 lead. Later in the set, the Cavaliers cut the lead to five but Lake Erie pushed the advantage to nine as they won the first set 25-16.
The second set featured five ties early as the teams exchanged points. As Walsh tied the set at six, Peiffer had back-to-back kills. Lake Erie gained an 8-6 advantage before Walsh scored six straight points, taking a four point lead. Peiffer tied the set at 18 with a kill but the Storm fell 25-21 in the second set.
Walsh started the third set with a 6-2 lead. The Storm chipped away at the lead before a combined block by Peiffer and Courtney Rosebrook (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) tied the set at eight. The Cavaliers extended the lead to five as Lake Erie took a timeout, trailing 16-11. Shannon Holsinger (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) had two kills and two block assists as the Storm tied the set at 22 with an 11-4 run. After a Walsh error, Lake Erie scored the final two points to comeback and win the set 25-23.
After three early ties, Walsh took the lead 6-5 over the Storm. After that, Lake Erie went on an 8-0 run for a 13-6 lead. Peiffer had two kills and Rosebrook had two combined blocks during the run. The Storm pulled away and took the set and match with a 25-12 set four win.
Fisher led the Storm with 15 kills on her Senior Night. Peiffer was great in all aspects as she had 11 kills, three service aces, 13 digs and three block assists. Lombardo had ten kills and seven block assists. Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) added eight kills and 19 digs on defense. Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) and Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) each had 22 assists and 14 and 12 digs, respectively. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) , the second senior, led all Storm players with 23 digs.
Lake Erie will have a quick turnaround with an 11:00 AM start on Saturday (Nov. 11) against Malone at the Osborne Center.
