Volleyball Earns First Win of 2019

CLARION, Pennsylvania

The Lake Erie Storm volleyball team earned their first win of the 2019 season over Davenport this morning with a final score of 3-1. With the win, the Storm improves their record to 1-3 while Davenport falls to 1-2. Davenport was the team to beat this weekend. They earned a spot in the GLIAC championship match in 2018 after postseason wins over Ashland and Michigan Tech but were sent home by Ferris State, currently ranked no. 12 in the NCAA volleyball DII poll, in the GLIAC final.

The first set of the match was hard and even-fought between both teams, going point-for-point throughout the set. Davenport pulled ahead with a three-point run late in the set to go ahead 23-20 before the Storm came back to tie. Storm senior Hailey Nielsen recorded a kill to give the Storm a 25-24 lead, and an attack error by Davenport gave the Storm a first set win.

The Storm jumped out to an early lead in the second set of the match, but Davenport came back to tie and the two teams were even through the duration of the set until two Storm kills, one by Hallie Zumack and the other by Maria Blatnik, gave the Storm an overall lead of 2-0.

Davenport won the third set of the match. But the Storm secured the last set after fighting back from a two-point deficit and scored nine straight points to win the match with a final set score of 25-18.

Leading the Storm offensively in the final match of the tournament were junior Courtney Rosebrook and sophomore Maria Blatnik, each securing 12 kills. Carolin Santa added 10 kills and eight digs. Three seniors held the defense down, with Moe Briggs digging out 23 balls, aided by Hallie Zumack who added 14 digs and Tashelle Piegan with 11 digs. Briggs currently leads the G-MAC with 72 total digs, averaging 4.8 digs per set through the opening weekend of competition.

The Storm heads back to Painesville to prepare for the Cal. P.A. Tournament this upcoming weekend, with matches against West Liberty, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Davis & Elkins, and Cal. P.A.
