Storm Struggles in Cal Pa. Tournament

CALIFORNIA, Pennsylvania

The Lake Erie College Storm volleyball program dropped four matches in the California Pa. tournament over the course of two days, falling to an overall record of 1-7.

West Liberty-

The Hilltoppers swept the Storm in three sets to open the tournament, with set scores of 14-25, 17-25, and 23-25. Senior Hallie Zumack was responsible for 14 assists, allowing freshman Dora Olah to lead the offense with seven kills, followed by junior Courtney Rosebrook, who added five. Olah posted a hitting percentage of .333 to set a career-high in her second tournament of collegiate play. Senior Morgan Briggs held the defense down with 12 digs, and Zumack also added five.


The Storm lost the match against IUP but it was a hard fight, dropping the first two sets and winning the last two to earn the extra set. Set scores were 22-25, 25-27, 25-16, 25-22, and 12-15. The freshman were the standouts against IUP, lead the offense and defense for the Storm. Taylor Metzler earning 12 kills followed by Dora Olah adding 11, and Kaylee Hiser dug out 25 balls, with Metzler also lending a hand on defense, adding 13 digs of her own.


The Senators took the third match of the tournament with a final score of 3-1. Set scores were as follows: 18-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-21. More information about the D&E match will be available as statistics are sent from the tournament statisticians.

Cal Pa.-

The Vulcans were strong in the first two sets, winning with set scores of 11-25 and 22-25. The Storm won the third set of the match, hanging on to a 25-20 win, but the Vulcans secured the last set of the tournament with a final score of 18-25. Storm junior Courtney Rosebrook went off, earning 13 kills with a hitting percentage of .440, and sophomore Maria Blatnik added 12 kills. Defensively, Kaylee Hiser recorded 28 digs, and Moe Briggs added 11. Concluding the match against the Vulcans, it was announced that Courtney Rosebrook earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for her performance this weekend, which marks the second week in a row she's been honored for tournament play.

Head coach Kyle Peck was experimenting throughout the tournament. "We had another weekend of tough competition", said Peck. "We worked through some different lineups, trying to find some consistency." 

The Storm volleyball team heads to a matchup with Seton Hill, another regionally ranked team, next week. They open up at home on the 21st in a tri-match with Urbana and Pitt-Johnstown.
