The Lake Erie College volleyball team earned their second win of the 2019 season this evening, improving their record to 2-9 after the conclusion of today's tri-match with Pitt-Johnstown and Urbana.
The Storm started the day against a rematch against Pitt-Johnstown and fell with a final score of 3-2. The Storm won the first set with a final score of 25-22, and rolled over the Mountain Cats in the third set, allowing UPJ to only 10 points in the set. However, Pitt-Johnstown won the second, fourth, and final sets of the match and secured the win.
Freshman Dora Olah led the Storm offensively, recording 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .370. Freshman Taylor Metzler also had a great game, earning a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Senior Moe Briggs held down the defense, leading the Storm with 15 digs, while senior captain Hallie Zumack added 13 of her own and also recording 25 assists for her seventh double-double of the year.
Lake Erie played Urbana in the final match of the day, earning a 3-2 comeback win over the Blue Knights. The Storm was neck and neck with the Blue Knights, trading points throughout the first set and pushed them to go up 29-27 after the first set. The Blue Knights won the second set with a final score of 25-21, but the Storm pulled out a third set win, 25-19. They traded places with Urbana, allowing them to win the fourth set, and they had to play their second fifth set of the day.
The Storm went up 2-0 in the final set with back to back kills by Olah and Maria Blatnik, but they allowed the Blue Knights to go on a four-point run, falling behind by two. The offense got it going, and took back the lead 5-4 before allowing Urbana another run. The two teams traded leads before head coach Kyle Peck called a timeout after Urbana went up 12-9 after a pair of attack errors committed by the hitters. Whatever adjustments were made helped, because the Storm came out of the huddle and scored five straight points to take back the lead at match point, with a score of 14-13. Urbana earned one more kill, but the Storm came back and won the match with kills by the freshman duo Taylor Metzler and Jordan Taylor.
Maria Blatnik earned 13 kills in the match against Urbana. Courtney Rosebrook and Dora Olah also added 11 kills. Jordan Taylor and Taylor Metzler recorded double-doubles, recording 11 kills and 16 and 18 digs respectively. Moe Briggs had a great game defensively, digging out 28 hard-hit balls from the Blue Knights.
Head coach Kyle Peck was waiting to see this from his team. "We fought.", said Peck. "We haven't really shown a ton of heart yet this season. We didn't pull that match out because we were better volleyball players, we won that match because we showed grit and gutted it out. I'm really proud of how hard they fought tonight."
The Storm returns to the Osborne Center on Monday night for a match against Central State University at 7 pm.
