The Lake Erie College Storm volleyball team earned a win over the Frostburg State University Bobcats this afternoon with a final score of 3-2. Set scores were 25-16, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, and 15-7.
The Storm started the first set with a 2-0 lead after two FSU attack errors but allowed the Bobcats to go up 4-2 with three mistakes committed on the Storm side of the court. They battled back to tie, and traded points with Frostburg State until the Bobcats went on another run to go up 14-9. The Storm scored nine straight points to make the score 18-14, due to five straight serves by Alexandria Becerra which included one ace. The Bobcats earned a kill to make the score 18-15, and then the Storm went on another run, scoring four points, two of which came from kills by freshman Taylor Metzler to bring the score to 22-15. Both teams then committed attack errors which brought the match score 23-16, and two Storm kills, one by Metzler and one by Courtney Rosebrook, gave the Storm a first set win.
In the second set of the match, the Bobcats earned 17 kills on 41 attempts, while the Storm earned 13 kills on 32 attempts, and earned the set win although the Storm had a better hitting percentage. The third set was the Bobcats best match of the day, statistically speaking, recording a team hitting percentage of .323 on 14 kills and four errors in 31 total attempts. The Storm recorded a hitting percentage of .259 with 11 kills and three errors in 27 total attempts.
The two teams were tied for the first 12 points in the fourth set, before going on a six-point run aided by four Bobcat attack errors, and two Storm kills by Carolin Santa and Alexandria Becerra to go up 11-6. Lake Erie then allowed one point for every two points scored to get to set point. Storm freshman Dora Olah earned a kill with a huge swing, and secured the set four win to tie the match.
In the tiebreaker, both teams were tied again for the first 12 points for a score of six-all. A kill by Olah and three straight kills by Storm junior Courtney Rosebrook allowed the Storm to go up 10-6, and the Bobcats called a timeout. Frostburg State earned a kill to make the score 10-7, but that was the last point they would score in the match. Kills by Paige Allen, Carolin Santa, Alexandria Becerra, and Taylor Metzler and a service ace by Courtney Rosebrook made the score 15-7 to earn the win over the Bobcats.
Dora Olah led the Storm in kills (14), while Taylor Metzler was right behind her with 13. Kaylee Hiser recorded 18 digs, and Metzler added 13. Today's match against Frostburg State marks the sixth double-double of the freshman's season.
The win puts the Lake Erie Storm volleyball team at 4-11 through 2019, while the Bobcats fall to 7-6. Today's match also marks the end of an eight-day grind in which Storm volleyball has played five matches. The team gets a much-deserved rest until Friday, October 4 when they will travel to Ohio Dominican for a G-MAC matchup. That contest is set to begin at 7pm.
